What the calculator estimates
It turns your wall and ceiling area, board type, sheet size, finish level, texture, and removal into a planning cost. Standard 1/2 inch board is most common, green board is for bathrooms, and Type X is fire-rated for garages and shared walls.
How drywall is priced
Drywall cost has three parts: the board itself, hanging labor, and taping and finishing labor. Board type, finish level, ceiling height, texture, waste, and local labor rates all change the per-square-foot price.
Planning note
Drywall pricing changes with board type, finish level, ceiling height, corner beads, access, and local labor. Confirm square footage, board type, finish level, and final quote with your contractor before ordering.
How much does drywall cost per square foot?
Installed drywall runs about 1.50 to 3.50 dollars per square foot for standard 1/2 inch board with a Level 4 finish. The board itself is 0.40 to 0.75 dollars, hanging labor is 0.50 to 1.00, and taping and finishing is 0.50 to 1.50 per square foot. This calculator lets you set each component for any board type and finish level.
How do I calculate drywall square footage?
Multiply each wall length by its height and add them up, then add the ceiling length by width. A 12 by 12 foot room with 8 foot ceilings has about 384 square feet of walls plus 144 of ceiling, for 528 total. Subtract windows and doors roughly, or leave them in for a buffer.
How many drywall sheets do I need?
Divide your total square footage by the sheet coverage. A standard 4 by 8 foot sheet covers 32 square feet. For 500 square feet you need about 16 sheets. This calculator rounds up and adds waste for you.
What finish level should I choose?
Level 4 is standard for most painted walls and ceilings. Level 3 is acceptable behind heavy texture or tile. Level 5 gives a perfectly smooth surface for gloss paint or critical lighting, and costs more in labor.
Does this include paint and trim?
No. This calculator covers board, hanging, taping, finishing, texture, and removal only. Primer, paint, corner beads beyond the standard allowance, door and window trim, and insulation are separate budgets.
Is this a contractor quote?
No. It is a planning estimate. Board type, finish level, ceiling height, corner beads, access, texture choice, delivery, taxes, and labor vary by contractor, region, and site conditions.
